Self-Destruction

Image
Man's inability to free himself from what is injurious to him makes us wonder. Many people take pleasure in what destroys them: tobacco, alcohol, drugs, fornication, excess of all kinds; their misdeeds and health risk involved are well-known. But either one cannot, or one will abandon what was originally a pleasure, and it has soon become an addiction. Very often any advice has no effect on behavior, and the results are disastrous. What applies to the physical domain is also true of the spiritual  plane. By wrongdoing, we not only do wrong: we also destroy ourselves. The obstinate inclination of our nature together with our inability to free ourselves from them are made clear by the Word of God. The prophet Jeremiah (ch. 7v24 )said, "They did not obey or incline their ear, but follow the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward". Refusing to listen to God and turning to Him to receive the deliverance he offers leads to etern

PEEVISH CHRISTIANS

Christian peevishness is an oxymoron, but unfortunately the title fits.Because the problem is so pervasive today, I’ve spoken about it at length in other places along with identifying a solution. But so many of God’s people today are profoundly peevish and so easily offended. Like it or not, these are marks of spiritual immaturity. Are you quick to take offense when you hear or read something that goes against your views or is stated differently from the way you would state it? Do you read the worst possible motives into what others say or write? Do you whine and complain when you see or read something you feel is inappropriate? (I’m not talking about profanity.) Do you draw your sword when someone says or writes something that rubs you the wrong way? If you intend to influence people with the life of Christ, you cannot afford to have thin skin. If you intend to go on into the deeper things of God, it requires transcending touchiness. Jesus Christ is neither peevish nor easily of

THE PHRASE "GOD IS GOOD

Image
The phrase "God is good" is just another example. Your friend has a baby and it's healthy. Your friend declares to everyone, "God is good!" A hurricane is headed toward your city. Against all expert prediction, it passes your town and hits another city instead. You post on your Facebook wall, "God is good." (What about those people who got hammered by the storm? Never mind.) Your course mates are complaining that they have problem with their last result, but you pass the last examination without carry-over, then you came and testify to them that "God is good". Your favorite football team wins a big game and your prayers are answered. You tell your friends, "God is good." (What about those people who prayed that their team would win, but lost? Never mind.) You bought an awesome new house which was foreclosed for a steal. You tell your friends and family, "God is good." (What about the people who lost tha

BE CLEAR OF YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE NOW

A great definition of being “lost” is to be alienated from your creative purpose. If you’re a follower of Jesus, you are no longer lost with respect to salvation. But you can be lost with respect to your specific purpose in life. Recent research shows that people who have a concrete purpose live 7.5 years longer than those who do not. Surprisingly an overwhelming number of believers still aren’t clear on their purpose. Purpose is the father of commitment. It is the mother of motivation. It is the parent of passion. Purpose provides meaning. It instills direction, inspiration, and unity. It also brings fulfillment. Without a discovery of purpose, everyday life becomes oppressive and demeaning. We can find little in it except the next thing which is virtually indistinguishable from the last thing. Purpose rescues us from this mundane existence. Find a man who has a clear purpose, and you have found a man with a passion. Find a woman who has a passion, and you have found a woman wi

IRAN'S CHURCH

Image
Everyone loves a good story. As Christians, we especially love stories that tell us how, when all seems lost, God makes a way. One such story is about the church in Iran—and it’s one of the greatest stories in the world today. It’s a simple story that can be summarized in just two sentences: Persecution threatened to wipe out Iran’s tiny church. Instead, the church in Iran has become the fastest growing in the world, and it is influencing the region for Christ. As simple as it is, such an amazing story is worth examining deeper. The Iranian revolution of 1979 established a hard-line Islamic regime. Over the next two decades, Christians faced increasing opposition and persecution: All missionaries were kicked out, evangelism was outlawed, Bibles in Persian were banned and soon became scarce, and several pastors were killed. The church came under tremendous pressure. Many feared the small Iranian church would soon wither away and die. But the exact opposite has happened.

A lot of people have the tendency to think a Christian dating relationship is dull or lacks adventure. And while there may be plenty of examples to feed the stereotype, this doesn’t mean that your life needs to be this way. If you’re under the impression that Jesus wants you to conform to some ridiculous mold that sucks the fun out of your dating life, it’s time to rethink who Jesus is and start to form a renewed mindset about what His desires are for your life. He wants you to enjoy dating to the fullest, and He wants you to begin to lay the foundational groundwork now so you can build upon it as time moves forward in your dating relationship. Shaping that foundation is critical, here are two helpful questions we should ask ourselves before a relationship spontaneously begins to grow. Are you going in the same direction? If the person you are dating seems to be going in a different direction than you in any regard, time can pass in the beginning where you are able to ignore

As Samuel sits, shelling cashews alongside 600 fellow workers each day, he shares more than idle gossip or a good joke. He’s sharing the gospel. It’s something he’s wanted to do since the moment he received Christ, but he had no idea he’d be called to do so in his current surroundings. Yet a life spent serving the Lord is full of surprises. Born into a Muslim family in Benin, Samuel heard the gospel on Christian radio and immediately surrendered his life to Christ. But that decision came with a cost. He was disowned by his family and had to relinquish his salaried teaching position to study for the pastorate. Money was always in short supply, and Samuel often struggled to pay for his education. Thankfully, he crossed paths with Jace Rabe, an American businessman who was so impressed by the young man’s desire to share the gospel that he and and his wife connected Samuel with their business partners, Richard and Vicki Barnhill, who paid for his theological education and l

12 SCRIPTURES TO HELP TAME TEMPTATION

Image
Temptation is a fork in the road. It's the presentation of a choice of which road to travel: the high one or the low one . Which path should you choose? Temptation is a fork in the road. It's the presentation of a choice of which road to travel: the high one or the low one. As a matter of fact, the wiser and more mature in Christ we become, the more treacherous and subtle are the choices. They don't become easier, but more difficult, for the devil is no fool. When you find yourself on the front lines of battle, stand firm and fight. Here are 20 truths from Scripture to help you tame the temptations you encounter as you pursue a life of holiness in the Lord : 1. 1 Corinthians 10:12-14 " Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may

5 AREAS OF YOUR LIFE SATAN WANTS TO ENTER

Satan wants nothing more than to enter certain areas of your life so he can gain a stronghold. He’ll try anything to throw you off center, distract you from your focus, and render you ineffective for the Kingdom of God. And I believe, that there are common areas he attacks. As long as we’re aware of his strategies, we can be on guard to keep him out of his targeted entry points. These are the five areas of your life Satan wants to enter: 1. Your heart – so it’s not God’s alone.   There’s a reason God’s Word tells us: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” ( Proverbs 4:23 ). Satan knows he has an entry point into your life if God is not first in our hearts. God’s first commandment, set forth under the Old Covenant, was: “You shall have no other gods before me” ( Exodus 20:3 ). And Jesus restated that under the New Covenant when He was asked what is the greatest commandment and responded by saying “‘Love the Lord your God with

HOW A DRUG ADDICT FOUND FREEDOM

by Ralp Cooley It was a glorious morning as our team met outside on the front patio of Hostel Bukou in Costa Rica. Three of the girls on our team had a 10 am appointment on campus with someone they met on Friday, so I felt a little rushed as we began opening the Word and started teaching through Galatians 5. We were in the midst of talking about, “What God has freed us from? And what has He has freed us to?” when a man from the busy street below came up to the patio and interrupted our study. My first reaction to the man named “Jonathan” was not very positive. He asked if anyone spoke Spanish and Joseph, who was sitting next to me, began to talk with him. He shared that he was a drug addict and that he needed about $8 from us to buy a bus ticket to a nearby city where a drug rehab center was. My response to his need was, that’s too much money to give to him and how do we know if his story is true? Joseph continued to talk with him and the Holy Spirit began to talk with me. My hea

THE HEART OF APOLOGETHICS

Image
Listening beats lecturing in helping someone move toward Christ. by Hayley Newsom Illustration by Matt Pamer Tina, a dentistry student in Slovenia, grew up going to church, but she didn’t believe in God. My ministry teammate, Anna, and I talked with her over coffee and enjoyed the sunshine at a sidewalk café as a cold winter loosened its grip. We told Tina that many students were curious about the bigger questions in life, like whether there is a God. With a smirk, she told us we were wasting our time. Was she daring us to explore her thoughts? To learn a bit of her worldview, we asked if she thought there was moral right and wrong. “No,” she said. “No? There’s nothing you can think of that most people around the world would agree was simply wrong?” I asked. Gritting her teeth, she said there wasn't. “So is it OK if children are abused?” I asked. Hesitatingly, she said it was and that one person couldn’t determine what was right for another. “Do you really believe it

TRUE LOVE WAITS

True Love Waits is not simply another Bible study for students on the topic of sex and virginity. It is a summons for the next generation of students to understand their sexuality in light of the gospel. When students realize how the gospel impacts their purity, their lives will be changed from the inside out. Once students pursue Christ through their sexual purity, they will demonstrate to the world around them that Jesus is the ultimate destination and desire of their hearts. Twenty years ago a small group of students in the Nashville area in USA committed themselves to Christ in the pursuit of purity. Little did they know that shortly thereafter there were going to be thousands of additional students join them in what came to be known as the movement of True Love Waits. Over the years True Love Waits has witnessed hundreds of thousands of young people commit their sexual purity to God, while at the same time offering the promise of hope and restoration in Christ for all who have

RAISING MEN, NOT BOYS

Image
Discipleship is a sexual issue. By this I mean it cannot be blind to gender. Our spiritual growth takes place within a male or female body so at some point we are led to consider the question: What does it look like, not simply to be a godly individual, but a godly male or female? What follows is a general overview of some of the current principles being taught in male discipleship as well as my own thoughts and synthesis from years of discipling men. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to speak to some men in our region. There were more than 250 guys in the room. We were seated in a coliseum setting with a table strategically placed in the middle. Many were in groups from their schools wondering what was in store for them. Most were expecting a talk of some sort, but few were ready for what took place. I stepped into the middle of the coliseum as an announcer does, preparing to describe the fight. With a loud, booming voice I called out to the men, igniting their passion

TOP 10 COMEDIANS OF ALL TIME

Image
Hilarious clean comedy for the family I thought I would share my opinion of the 10 funniest Christian stand up comedians. What’s great about watching christian comedy is it’s clean and you can watch with your entire family. The list includes comedians Tim Hawkins, Chonda Pierce, Michael Junior, Ken Davis, Taylor Mason,  Brad Stine, Rich Praytor, Thor Ramsey, Jeff Allen and Aaron Wilburn. They were the funniest in the Christian comedy genre. If you haven’t watched Christian comedians before these guys will have you rolling. Benefits of Laughter This is Hilarious Christian humor at its best and the genre is only getting better all the time. It’s important to exercise our facial muscles and in Proverbs 17:22 it says, A merry heart doeth good [like] medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. One of laughters benefits is believed to include oxygenation of the blood, a bolstering of the immune system through heightened T-cell activity and reduction in stress hormo
