IRAN'S CHURCH

Image
Everyone loves a good story. As Christians, we especially love stories that tell us how, when all seems lost, God makes a way. One such story is about the church in Iran—and it’s one of the greatest stories in the world today. It’s a simple story that can be summarized in just two sentences: Persecution threatened to wipe out Iran’s tiny church. Instead, the church in Iran has become the fastest growing in the world, and it is influencing the region for Christ. As simple as it is, such an amazing story is worth examining deeper. The Iranian revolution of 1979 established a hard-line Islamic regime. Over the next two decades, Christians faced increasing opposition and persecution: All missionaries were kicked out, evangelism was outlawed, Bibles in Persian were banned and soon became scarce, and several pastors were killed. The church came under tremendous pressure. Many feared the small Iranian church would soon wither away and die. But the exact opposite has happened.

A lot of people have the tendency to think a Christian dating relationship is dull or lacks adventure. And while there may be plenty of examples to feed the stereotype, this doesn’t mean that your life needs to be this way. If you’re under the impression that Jesus wants you to conform to some ridiculous mold that sucks the fun out of your dating life, it’s time to rethink who Jesus is and start to form a renewed mindset about what His desires are for your life. He wants you to enjoy dating to the fullest, and He wants you to begin to lay the foundational groundwork now so you can build upon it as time moves forward in your dating relationship. Shaping that foundation is critical, here are two helpful questions we should ask ourselves before a relationship spontaneously begins to grow. Are you going in the same direction? If the person you are dating seems to be going in a different direction than you in any regard, time can pass in the beginning where you are able to ignore

As Samuel sits, shelling cashews alongside 600 fellow workers each day, he shares more than idle gossip or a good joke. He’s sharing the gospel. It’s something he’s wanted to do since the moment he received Christ, but he had no idea he’d be called to do so in his current surroundings. Yet a life spent serving the Lord is full of surprises. Born into a Muslim family in Benin, Samuel heard the gospel on Christian radio and immediately surrendered his life to Christ. But that decision came with a cost. He was disowned by his family and had to relinquish his salaried teaching position to study for the pastorate. Money was always in short supply, and Samuel often struggled to pay for his education. Thankfully, he crossed paths with Jace Rabe, an American businessman who was so impressed by the young man’s desire to share the gospel that he and and his wife connected Samuel with their business partners, Richard and Vicki Barnhill, who paid for his theological education and l

12 SCRIPTURES TO HELP TAME TEMPTATION

Image
Temptation is a fork in the road. It's the presentation of a choice of which road to travel: the high one or the low one . Which path should you choose? Temptation is a fork in the road. It's the presentation of a choice of which road to travel: the high one or the low one. As a matter of fact, the wiser and more mature in Christ we become, the more treacherous and subtle are the choices. They don't become easier, but more difficult, for the devil is no fool. When you find yourself on the front lines of battle, stand firm and fight. Here are 20 truths from Scripture to help you tame the temptations you encounter as you pursue a life of holiness in the Lord : 1. 1 Corinthians 10:12-14 " Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may

5 AREAS OF YOUR LIFE SATAN WANTS TO ENTER

Satan wants nothing more than to enter certain areas of your life so he can gain a stronghold. He’ll try anything to throw you off center, distract you from your focus, and render you ineffective for the Kingdom of God. And I believe, that there are common areas he attacks. As long as we’re aware of his strategies, we can be on guard to keep him out of his targeted entry points. These are the five areas of your life Satan wants to enter: 1. Your heart – so it’s not God’s alone.   There’s a reason God’s Word tells us: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” ( Proverbs 4:23 ). Satan knows he has an entry point into your life if God is not first in our hearts. God’s first commandment, set forth under the Old Covenant, was: “You shall have no other gods before me” ( Exodus 20:3 ). And Jesus restated that under the New Covenant when He was asked what is the greatest commandment and responded by saying “‘Love the Lord your God with

HOW A DRUG ADDICT FOUND FREEDOM

by Ralp Cooley It was a glorious morning as our team met outside on the front patio of Hostel Bukou in Costa Rica. Three of the girls on our team had a 10 am appointment on campus with someone they met on Friday, so I felt a little rushed as we began opening the Word and started teaching through Galatians 5. We were in the midst of talking about, “What God has freed us from? And what has He has freed us to?” when a man from the busy street below came up to the patio and interrupted our study. My first reaction to the man named “Jonathan” was not very positive. He asked if anyone spoke Spanish and Joseph, who was sitting next to me, began to talk with him. He shared that he was a drug addict and that he needed about $8 from us to buy a bus ticket to a nearby city where a drug rehab center was. My response to his need was, that’s too much money to give to him and how do we know if his story is true? Joseph continued to talk with him and the Holy Spirit began to talk with me. My hea

THE HEART OF APOLOGETHICS

Image
Listening beats lecturing in helping someone move toward Christ. by Hayley Newsom Illustration by Matt Pamer Tina, a dentistry student in Slovenia, grew up going to church, but she didn’t believe in God. My ministry teammate, Anna, and I talked with her over coffee and enjoyed the sunshine at a sidewalk cafĂ© as a cold winter loosened its grip. We told Tina that many students were curious about the bigger questions in life, like whether there is a God. With a smirk, she told us we were wasting our time. Was she daring us to explore her thoughts? To learn a bit of her worldview, we asked if she thought there was moral right and wrong. “No,” she said. “No? There’s nothing you can think of that most people around the world would agree was simply wrong?” I asked. Gritting her teeth, she said there wasn't. “So is it OK if children are abused?” I asked. Hesitatingly, she said it was and that one person couldn’t determine what was right for another. “Do you really believe it
